About

Who writes the register, how entries are chosen, and what it deliberately leaves out.

Blitzstrikersin is an independent hotel register. It covers four categories — art, capsule, casino and ice — and currently holds eleven entries. That number is small on purpose.

Why so few

A list of five hundred hotels is a database. It tells you nothing you could not get from a search box. We would rather write three hundred careful words about a building than one line about fifty. If a property is here, someone read about it properly, worked out what makes it unlike its neighbours, and wrote that down.

The one-entry category

Ice hotels are held to a single entry. Frozen architecture comes and goes season by season, and a register that lists a hotel which may not be standing next winter is worse than useless. So we list the one that stands year-round and say why.

How an entry gets written

  • Establish the building. What it was before, what it is now, how it is laid out.
  • Find the constraint. Every property in this register is shaped by something — a collection, a floor area, a gaming licence, a temperature.
  • Write three paragraphs. No more. If it cannot be described in three, it has not been understood yet.
  • Add the caveat. Each entry ends with the one thing we would want told to us before arriving.

What we do not do

No star ratings. No aggregate scores. No guest reviews, real or otherwise. No booking engine, no rates, no availability calendar, and no commission on anything you do after leaving the site. Where a property belongs to a larger group or a First Nation, we say so in the entry rather than burying it.

Geography

The register is geo-neutral. Entries sit in the United States, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Japan and Canada, and none of those is treated as home. We are not writing as locals anywhere, and we do not pretend to insider knowledge we have not got.

The format

Every entry is a packet: a coloured band with the name, a leaf sprig in the corner, and prose underneath. The layout borrows from old nursery seed cards, which were designed to describe a thing honestly in a small space. That seemed like the right model.

Corrections

Buildings change hands, close wings and rebuild floors. If something here has gone out of date, the contact page explains how to tell us.
